"I started out as one of those kids who watched everything. After a while i think i could tell the crux of a films plot after the first few minutes of watching them, figuring out what these writers or directors watched to be inspired by. So whilst all these kids were watching Indiana Jones or Star Wars, i was there watching stuff from Walter Hill, Robert Harmon and Lawrence Kasdan etc. I was always attracted to the ark of the characters and back story behind them, because that's what telling a story is all about really. You need to connect with them to feel for them. You spend upto 2 hours with these people and then its over so you need to make that impression. Some of the first films that really inspired me into the movie making process, from script to technique, obviously a lot of people say Blade Runner which is one, but Robert Harmon's The Hitcher taught me not to separate the audience from the movie by reminding them they are watching a movie; Meaning no fancy cutaways or tracking shots through walls. Kasdan's The Big Chill taught me about characterization, Smoke and Blue In The Face gave me a love of improv and being able to make something on little money with people who love what they do. I try and make films that don't follow any ground that has been stepped on. I like to have an original edge. I always look at my films like footprints in mud, you can either step into an already made footprint and make it deeper or mess it up or create a fresh footprint that others will. I don't pretend to know how to better someone elses footprint so i choose to create my own, and i think that's the way it should be for anyone who wants to be that. Its the difference between a director and a filmmaker in my opinion."
